November 23rd, 2009 admin
When we talk about the environment, airlines are the first to be criticised but they are not the only culprits, as consumers we have a responsibility too. I have started to see company’s concentrate on eco and green initiatives but the environment is low down on most consumers’ requirements. Donating to local projects According to a new startup called ekoVenture they will donate 10% of their profit to help support the local people…

By Joe Brancatelli After the first full year of charging checked baggage fees on flights , the five remaining legacy carriers are racking up huge annual losses. American Airlines, for example, reported a full-year 2009 loss of $1.5 billion, and Continental reported a 2009 loss of $282 million. On the other hand, Southwest Airlines, the lone carrier...
Millions of consumers plan their own short-break by booking flights and accommodation separately and as I wrote recently consumers need to keep a look out for fake websites. Book your accommodation through a personal recommendation or a company that you have used before. Taking advantage of inexperience You have to bear in mind that a high percentage...
The excitement of being on holiday sometimes helps us lose our common sense and as a tourist they are many people who want to take advantage that you are in an unfamiliar location. In 2003, I visited Kuala Lumpur and I was approached by a man as I walked down the street. Vulnerable solo traveller He chatted to me and then invited me for a drink...
It has been an interesting year for blogs and blogging: there was some stupid talk that blogs are dying, loads of debates on blogger trips and the quality of sponsored blog posts. Then there’s bloggers coming together to raise thousands of pounds to help build a school in Cambodia. Blogs useful for travel consumers Today, I am going to highlight...
To help promote my blog I use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter but consumers too are finding the benefits of using these sites when planning their trip. What better way to learn about your next holiday destination than from an experienced traveller or local. Some people even arrange to meet up with other travellers and locals...
The nasty weather in the UK through Christmas and the New Year meant many travellers plans were disrupted, with flights delayed or cancelled. There’s not a great deal you can do about the weather but I wish our airports and public transport in general could cope with the bad weather; it is winter after all. Airline tricks and unhelpful customer...
One of the news reports on the local news on Friday was about the future of Robin Hood airport, and how that it is seeing a reduction in the number of passengers. Some of the airlines are pulling out because of this. They expected to see 1.9million people depart, but the figure is less than half of this. Passenger confusion For …

DOLLAR WATCH: Surprise! Travel Fees Keep Rising Frontier Airlines has been busy on the fee front. It has raised its first checked bag fee to $20 and its second checked bag fee to $30. It also lowered some of its ticket-change fees. The supposedly fee-free carrier, Southwest Airlines, has invented an optional new charge. For $10, you can get so-called...
I have been writing this blog for over four years and I have enjoyed it, sure it has had its ups and downs. I write primarily from my own experiences and thoughts about travel, but also I receive a lot of emails from consumers which spark me into a post about the travel industry. Looking at travel from another perspective Some people have been...
I use Twitter to network with people who read my blog and it helps me build a new audience. It’s great that travel companies are starting to embrace social media but I wanted to look at their behaviour and were they interacting with travel consumers. Twitter secret shopper I could have carried out these few tests on my Travel Rants twitter account,...

Next month sees the release of Valkyrie, a film about Claus von Stauffenberg, the man who tried to assassinate Adolph Hitler. Plenty of time travelers have had the same idea, although their plan was to kill Hitler before he enacted mass genocide. Their intentions may be noble, but the plans always seem to go awry, leaving history unchanged or even...
