  Yemen is stepping up security measures at the Sanaa international airport, after the al-Qaeda in Arabic Peninsula threatened more attacks on American targets. The country had also come under criticism after a Nigerian allegedly attempted to blow up a US airliner on Christmas Day after it was revealed that the suspect had undergone training in Yemen. In a country where carrying weapons or daggers is a tradition, security guards at airports are taking no chances. Brand-new state of the art equipment - including advanced screening machines and a device capable of detecting various explosives - have been installed and travellers are being thoroughly searched. But is tighter airport security the answer to al-Qaeda threats? Many say the country must also address the issues that spawn radicalism and extremism. [February 18, 2010]

  Nude Protest: Airport Body Scanners...
  The underwear bombers Christmas Day attack has prompted calls for the increased use of full-body scanners at airports. So to protest, members of the Pirate Party in Germany organized a fleshmob of people who stripped down to their skivvies last Sunday and converged on the Berlin-Tegal airport. The protesters marked their bodies with a number of messages such as, Something to hide? and Be a good citizen — drop your pants. One woman has the word diaper scrawled on her lower back with an arrow pointing to her underwear and the word prosthetic printed on her leg. The word piercing and an arrow point to one of her breasts. The full-body scanners use high-frequency radio waves to produce an image of a passengers naked body beneath clothes. Anything a passenger is carrying against the body — weapons, drugs or explosives — would be exposed. The scanners would also reveal the presence of prosthetic devices and breast implants. As such, there have been privacy and legal concerns raised about the invasive equipment, particularly because its unclear if the scanners would be able to detect explosives hidden in body cavities and would therefore likely provide only minimal security.

  Press Release Privacy advocate wants Michelle Obama to demonstrate airports new naked body scanners (Washington DC) The controversial so-called naked body scanners are causing concerns over the graphic images they produce, leading one privacy advocate to call for a published photo of Michelle Obama using the machine. If President Obama doesnt think that these machines are invasive, then he should have no problem allowing images of his wife being scanned by the machines to be released to the press, says privacy advocate Mark Dice. Images of both men and women that look like negatives have been circulating the web which show how the body scanners work, and have caused alarm over their graphic nature. Since the attempted Christmas Day terrorist attack on a flight headed for Detroit, the Transportation Security Administration has announced plans to buy 300 of the controversial scanners for American airports. "Since the President insists these scanners are not inappropriate or invasive, I think he should feel perfectly comfortable with Michelle demonstrating them," says Dice.   Full body scanners installed in airports in the wake of the attempted bombing of a Christmas Day flight to the US are raising questions over privacy, health and cost. In Europe, experts are gathering to assess the need for their introduction, with the EU meeting this week to discuss whether to put them to use in all member states. Some airports, however, aren't waiting for a consensus and are already using the technology. Nazanine Moshiri reports.
