Frustrations with travel consumers rant
Frustrations with travel consumers rant
Regular readers will know I love a rant at the travel industry but today I am going to start by ranting at travel consumers! I love receiving emails from you, in fact I am really happy when I have helped you deal with a complaint, but it’s time to take some responsibility when you are booking your holiday. Consumer’s not purchasing insurance...

PR & SEO agencies assume that all travel bloggers are cheap
I have felt this rant rumbling for a while. I offer banner advertising to cover the cost of running of the blog and the amount of effort that I put into it. Lately, I am receiving a lot of requests from PR and SEO agencies who think that I will give free links or write them a keyword rich post. Annoyed by SEO and PR agencies I write about the...

Five improvements for the UK travel industry in 2010
I have mentioned some of these improvements in separate posts but I wanted to combine them into one post. These are give changes that I think would make life easier for consumers. Apartments abroad and Resort taxis ceased trading
I have just heard that accommodation only company Apartments abroad has today ceased trading. The company sold accommodation all over the world including popular tourist destinations in Europe and the US. They do not appear to be ABTA members, I thought they were though. Independent traveller protection issues I am not sure at this point how many...

US to charge £9 ESTA fee to enter the country
Since early 2009, British holidaymakers have applied for entry into the United States as part of the visa waiver program. You complete the ESTA form online; it takes 72 hours to authorise, lasts for two years, and is currently free to enter the United States. That is all set to change, in that, from the 8 September though it will cost you £9...

Confusion over paid European Health Card applications
The Times published a piece I wrote on companies charging consumers to apply for a European Health Insurance Card. This isn’t the first time that I have come across this type of service; earlier in the year I mentioned that a number of sites were charging for the ESTA for US visa applications.  Read More →
Spirit Airlines to charge fee for carry-on bags
Get ready for the latest news on baggage fees from Spirit Airlines. The airline says it’s going to begin charging up to $30 per carry-on for travel beginning August 1, 2010 . This applies to passengers who  booked tickets after April 5, 2010 . Those who booked before April 5 won’t have to pay the new carry-on fees. Passengers still get one...
Time to crackdown on false-pricing in travel
Time to crackdown on false-pricing in travel
An issue that annoys me is false pricing, where the company reduces the real price of the holiday just to get customers through the door but when they get to the booking stage, the holiday has shot up in price, or they receive an email saying that the price is incorrect. Blame culture in travel It seems to me that a lot of the issues that consumers...
Travel agents to inspire consumers or just sell holidays
Travel agents to inspire consumers or just sell holidays
A question that has been bugging me for a little while is about the role of a traditional travel agent. I recently wrote about some of the frustrations that consumers have with booking holidays and often one of the biggest challenges is to find a holiday destination that everyone you want to visit. Online they are tons of inspiration sites which...
